Residential Construction and Renovation - Vienna Urban Renewal Prize 2014

The apartment building in the 20th district has been renovated and expanded with five maisonette units. Dismantling the courtyard wing significantly improves the exposure of natural light in the courtyard, and provides more than half of the apartments with open spaces by allowing for balconies and terracing the courtyard.

Arrangement of Space

The 5 new and 25 renovated apartments are spread over 5 levels and 2 new attic conversion floors of the 2-wing building. The residential units on the top floor were planned as maisonettes and equipped with spacious terraces. A new entrance with ancillary rooms was created on the ground floor next to the existing business office.

The new attic conversion units used wood construction with an Alucobond facade. The existing facade received a thermal retrofit.

Green Space

The courtyard, which takes over the function of the barrier-free access for street wing, was landscaped with large-scale plant pots, planted with bamboo. Such pots were also used as room-dividing elements on the terraces and balconies. The large terraces have been accentuated with extensive green areas.
