This sculptural residential housing offers various maisonette and single-floor apartments, which all include individual open spaces. The varying qualities of the outdoor spaces – in the form of rail line, secondary road and a green courtyard in the south – were key factors in planning. P.GOOD Architects managed to ensure that the majority of apartments include individual open spaces for an attractive, quiet courtyard.
Arrangement of Space
The 30 units of the building are spread over 5 upper floors and 2 penthouse floors. Nine apartments were planned as maisonette units. Various ancillary rooms lie next to the entrance area and a retail space on the ground floor. Furthermore there is a basement garage with 25 parking spaces, and an additional 6 parking spaces in a street-level garage.
Ground Floor Zone
The retail space with its shop windows contributes to the revitalization of the street level. Adjacent is the glass foyer area of the apartment building. The glass facade of the ground floor in Knöllgasse is continued through to the communal room on the first floor. Various ancillary rooms are grouped together and face Buchengasse.
The load-bearing walls and the roof of the building consist of an economical reinforced concrete structure with mineral wool thermal insulation.
The street sides are clad with a curtain wall made of large fiber cement panels, which give the building its unique appearance.
In the Knöllgasse / Buchengasse block, four subsidized residential buildings emerge, all sharing a green space in the block interior. The open areas are diversely landscaped and provide a variety of zones for outdoor play and recreation.
